South Korea is a thrilling blend of old-world charm and cutting-edge modernity. One minute you’re walking through ancient palaces in traditional hanok villages, and the next you’re sipping coffee in a neon-lit café that looks straight out of a K-drama. The energy in cities like Seoul is electric, the coast in cities like Busan is captivating, while the countryside offers peaceful temples, lush mountains, and stunning coastlines. It’s a country full of surprises, flavours, and warm-hearted experiences waiting for you.

TYPICAL COSTS WHEN TRAVELLING IN SOUTH KOREA
Accommodation – South Korea offers a wide range of accommodation options to fit every budget. A bed in a hostel or guesthouse usually costs between ₩20,000–₩40,000 per night (around 13–27€). Mid-range hotels or boutique stays range from ₩60,000–₩120,000. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even stay in a traditional hanok for a unique local experience!
Food – Eating out is super affordable if you stick to local fare. A hearty Korean meal in a casual restaurant will cost around ₩7,000–₩10,000 (5–7 €). Street food is even cheaper and delicious – think tteokbokki, mandu, and hotteok for less than five euros. Western-style restaurants and cafés are pricier, especially in trendy neighbourhoods, but still quite cheap compared to Europe.
Transportation – Public transport is efficient, clean, and budget-friendly. A metro or bus ride in major cities like Seoul or Busan costs about ₩1,250 (under 2€) with a T-Money card. But if you are doing longer trips, high-speed KTX train rides between cities are a little bit more expensive (e.g. Seoul to Busan around ₩55,000), but still very reasonable compared to European standards.
어묵탕 (eomuk-tang)
Suggested daily budget – If you’re traveling on a budget, you can comfortably get by on ₩50,000–₩70,000 per day (about 35–50 €), especially if you stay in guesthouses/hostels, eat local food, and use public transport. A mid-range traveler spending a bit more on cafés, attractions, or private rooms might spend ₩80,000–₩120,000 daily. South Korea can be surprisingly affordable – it all depends on your travel style (and how many K-beauty shops you “accidentally” walk into!).
MONEY SAVING TIPS
1
T-Money Cards Load one up for cheaper metro, bus and even convenience store purchases. It's a great way to move around the city like a local.
2
Eat Like a Local Street food, small family-run restaurants, and if you are really on a tight budget, kimbap shops are budget-friendly and delicious.
3
Sleep in Guesthouses Not only cheaper, but also a great way to meet other travellers and locals. In any city, you will find a hostel or a guesthouse to stay.
4
Skip the Taxis Even though they aren't the most expensive taxis I've ever ridden, in South Korea, the public transport is safe, clean, and runs like clockwork – even late at night.

HOW TO GET READY FOR SOUTH KOREA?
You are already taking the first step, which is reading this blog! Now, start by getting familiar with some basic Korean phrases – a simple annyeonghaseyo or gamsahamnida can go a long way. Make sure your SIM card or eSIM is ready to keep you connected, and download Naver Maps (Google Maps doesn’t work well here).
South Korea is mostly safe, but remember to pack adapters (220V, type F) and bring comfy shoes for all the walking. Also, brush up on local customs – tipping isn’t common, and slurping your noodles is totally fine!
