How to get there?

  • Name: Brown Rice Portobello
  • Price range:
  • Address: 207-209 Portobello Rd, London W11 1LU, United Kingdom

This resrautant is a buffet, but I recommend trying:

  • Sweet & sour chicken – Sometimes they change this to fish, so be mindful if you have any allergies
  • Rice noodles – They have it with only lemon poured over and you can add your favourite sauce without paying extra

Honestly, when I arrived at the door of Brown Rice, I had some small seconds of considering if I should go inside. But I’m so glad that I did!

First, I was worried that going solo might be a problem, but they have so many little tables already prepared, so as soon as I got there, they helped me to my table. You will have to pay first, choose your drink & sit.

They will give you a dish which you will use for the buffet. There is no limit in time (or at least I wasn’t told the opposite), so feel free to eat comfortably.

What They're Famous For

  • Buffet for less than 10£ – Eating in London is expensive, so finding a good but simple Thai buffet for less than 10 pounds it’s sort of a discoverement!
  • Take away possible – There was an option to do take away for a cheaper price, which chan be good too if you are hosted nearby and you don’t feel like staying at the restaurant.

I went there a couple of times since I was staying at Notting Hill area, the second time during the weekend so it was more crowded than I expected it, but I didn’t have to wait to get a seat, so it was good anyway!

If you enjoy Thai food and a good cheap buffet, then Brown Rice is the place to go!

My Recommendations

In this case, it will matter if you are into spicy food, since then you will have more options than someone who doesn’t eat spice (like me). Because let me tell you, it was REALLY spicy!

  • Get there during a week day — Way less people coming and going, and specially moving the food around!
  • If you are not in a hurry, avoid rush hours – Since I’m Spanish I tend to eat later than my foreigner friends, that helped me to avoid rush hours at the restaurant and have less crowds too.
  • If you go during the weekend — Know that the Portobello Market is right on the front of the restaurant and you will have to push your way through all the tourists (yes, you being one of them) to get to the door.

The vibe here is casual and bustling since it’s located right at Portobello Road. However I didn’t have any waiting line —it’s definitely worth it! Go during week days, to avoid big crowds. If you go during the weekend, go enjoy the Portobello market and come back right on time for lunch/dinner!
